Our Alaskan Huskies

What is a sled dog?

Raven Clan Kennels is home to more than 20 Alaskan Huskies. Most commonly used in dog mushing, Alaskan Huskies are a hard-working, intelligent, athletic and incredibly loving breed of dog. They are smaller than the "typical" Husky most people envision (Siberian Huskies), but don't let their size fool you! These dogs are able to pull their musher and sled for hundreds of miles.

Unlike many other dog breeds, the Alaskan Husky has never been bred to look a certain way, instead they have been bred for performance. Originally bred from some of the warmest and strongest dogs, such as Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, the Alaskan Husky was meant to haul sleds and stay warm for days at a time. Eventually, as the sport of dog mushing grew, various sighthounds, such as Greyhounds and Pointers were bred into Alaskan Husky lines, giving the dogs a slighter build and greater speed.

On the outside, Alaskan Huskies look very different from one another, but on the inside, they are very similar, with hearts and lungs and highly efficient metabolisms. They are some of the fastest, strongest and healthiest dogs in existence.

Our huskies live an exciting life doing what they love most: running! In between runs you can find them sleeping in the sunshine, playing together, howling under the stars and getting lots and lots of food! Between exercising and maintaining their body temperature, Alaskan Huskies can burn over 10,000 calories a day.
